A warm, comforting apple crumble made by pan‑cooking the apple filling before baking, perfect for a cozy dessert.
Heat butter in a large pan over medium heat, add sliced apples and cook until slightly softened. Sprinkle sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and a pinch of salt, stir and let the apples release their juices. Add lemon juice and vanilla, then dust with flour (or cornstarch) and cook until the mixture thickens and looks glossy. Transfer the cooked apples into a baking dish.
In a mixing bowl combine flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt. Add the cold butter cubes and rub with your fingers until the mixture forms a crumbly texture with both fine and chunky bits.
Spread the crumble topping evenly over the cooked apples in the baking dish. Bake in a pre‑heated oven at 180 °C (350 °F) for about 25‑30 minutes, until the topping is golden and the filling is bubbling around the edges.
Allow the crumble to rest for 5‑10 minutes so the filling thickens, then serve warm with ice cream, whipped cream or custard if desired.
